Le Polo a été introduit à Malte en 1868 par les officiers de la British Army en escale sur l'île en chemin vers ou depuis l'Inde. Les soldats du régiment de Cavalerie et les officiers de la flotte méditerranéenne de la Royal Navy furent les premières équipes à jouer sur le sol Maltais. Le Malta Polo Club est donc le plus ancien club de Polo d'Europe, et le deuxième plus ancien au monde, derrière le premier club fondé à Calcutta en Inde.

Polo was first introduced in Malta in 1868 by the British Army Officers, who stationed in Malta on their way to or coming back from India. The Cavalry regiments together with the officers of the Mediterranean fleet of the Royal Naxy were the first teams to play in Malta. The Malta Polo Club is therefore the oldest Polo Club in Europe, and the second oldest in the world, after the first one founded in Calcutta, India.
